The Top 10 Tips To Help Speed Up Your Recovery After a Rhinoplasty in Toronto

LEARN MORE ABOUT RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURES

So, you’ve booked your Toronto rhinoplasty procedure, and now you’re excited to see results. Many patients note significant changes right away. However, no matter your nose job type, there are likely to be longer-term improvements you’ll wait for.

Your facial surgeon will give you recovery instructions specific to your situation. We’re offering additional, general guidelines to help speed up the process and ensure optimal results.

Rhinoplasty in Toronto Recovery tips:

1. Listen to Your surgeon

This may seem obvious, but some people think they can take it or leave it when they receive instructions for safe healing. Especially considering what to avoid, don’t take chances! If an instruction doesn’t make sense to you, we encourage you to ask questions. Your surgeon and staff will be happy to explain all the good reasons for guidelines they give you.

2. Keep Your Head up

Sleeping differently than you’re used to can be frustrating after rhinoplasty in Toronto.

The reason it’s essential to keep your head elevated is that blood pressure increases with gravity and lower positioning. That increase leads to more swelling, and often more discomfort. Laying flat or side-sleeping could prolong bruising. We recommend that you prop up your mattress, gather lots of firm cushions before your surgery, and place pillows on either side of your head to prevent rolling over. Some patients find it easier to sleep in a recliner for the first 6 weeks.

3. Use Compresses With Care

For the first few days after rhinoplasty, application of cold compresses to your cheeks and eyes is generally permitted and can be very soothing. What’s not allowed is pressing anything onto the nose itself. Ice packs are typically discouraged because your ability to sense freezing and unsafe contact with the nose will be a little diminished. If you apply compresses, take care to keep them off the nose.

Commonly referred to as a nose job, nasal surgery allows a person to change the size of their nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Dramatic improvements to facial proportion and harmony of features are achieved through meticulous and subtle adjustments. In the hands of a skilled and experienced facial cosmetic surgeon, a person’s appearance can be improved without it appearing obvious they had surgical modifications. learn more.

4. Take Your Medication

Rhinoplasty isn’t generally described as painful, though the sensation of facial pressure and congestion can be annoying. Some people forgoe pain medication, but discomfort keeps them up at night. Losing sleep can make you miserable, and might prolong your healing too. You need plenty of rest, so take your medication as directed.

5. Maintain a Balanced Diet to Heal well

You may feel nauseous after surgery, or lose your appetite for other reasons — Plan small, light meals that are highly nutritious. Your diet should contain plenty of veggies, protein and nutrients to help you recover faster.

6. Avoid Blowing Your Nose

It’s a natural impulse when you feel “stuffed up.” Rhinoplasty patients are tempted to blow their noses, but you must resist. The sensation of blocked nasal passages is caused by swollen mucous membranes and not only will blowing not resolve it, but you could do damage. Instead, talk to your surgeon about using nasal sprays for comfort.

7. Avoid Exercise

For most strenuous activity and sports, Toronto rhinoplasty surgeons recommend 6 weeks off, so bones and other tissue regain strength. You may be permitted to return to light cardio before then, but the first few weeks are typically a strictly no-exercise period. Plan some light, restful and safe things to occupy you in the meantime.

8. Keep Glasses off Your Nose

Whether for reading or sunglasses- you’re not permitted to rest anything on the bridge of your new nose. Those who have a prescription may be able to switch to contacts for a time. Your surgeon will let you know when it’s safe to ease back into wearing glasses.

9. Avoid Sun Exposure

In the months after your rhinoplasty, nasal skin will be inflamed and highly sensitive to damage. That means you’ll be prone to sunburn and could even develop darkened pigment on the nose or scars. You can wear a broad-brimmed hat, and do your best to stay in the shade.

10. Plan to be Patient!

Those who expect an instant recovery are often frustrated, but if you understand that final results are seen several months after rhinoplasty, you won’t be too hard on yourself.

Following the advice above and attending all follow-up appointments will keep you motivated and optimistic about your final results.
