What is the leading wrinkle-reducer made from?
Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® and Dysport® are prescription medications produced in a controlled laboratory setting from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Originally created and approved for the correction of crossed eyes and eyelid tremors, in 2002, this medication received FDA approval for frown lines between the eyebrows and the rest is history. In Toronto, BOTOX® is a top choice for cosmetic clients, and this is one of the most popular medications worldwide with its effectiveness and uses extensively studied and proven.
Do people ask if you’re tired or angry when you aren’t? One of the more frustrating aspects of facial ageing is that you may develop lines and furrows which make you appear unhappy or even older than you are. There’s good news. Read on to learn more.
Planning Your BOTOX in Toronto
How do injectable wrinkle treatments work?
Neuromodulators work by blocking signals from nerves that direct muscle movement which in turn, decreases their mobility. Daily, dynamic muscle movement on your face is a powerful, persistent force. Facial expressions are valuable and desirable, yet the skin overlying muscles will begin to show permanent creasing as a result.
A facial cosmetic surgeon’s objective for treating cosmetic patients for facial wrinkles and lines is to soften their appearance through carefully targeting select muscles and reducing their movement in a balanced way. The client is still able to move their face naturally but lines smooth away in the desired areas. This effective treatment is also a wonderful preventative, meaning that people who are in their 20’s and 30’s also benefit because they are preventing the formation of deep lines and wrinkles before they even start.
Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® are derived from a toxin but far removed from the toxic effects of it. Instead, in the cosmetic treatment form, they consist of a pure protein which is composed of two peptides bonded together. The temporary, localized blockage of acetylcholine used for muscle contractility means decreased muscle contraction. Effects in the treatment area naturally wear off as the body’s enzymes break down the product into its peptide elements and clear it away within 4-6 months.
What will your Toronto BOTOX® treatment be like?
When you visit us at Verso for wrinkle reduction treatment, your consultation for BOTOX® or Dysport® will involve meeting with Dr. Kolenda, talking about your desired outcomes and an examination of your face and muscles. He’ll recommend a custom-tailored approach and explain the benefits as well as risks and considerations.
The recovery is simple and quick, but patients are advised to avoid a few activities within the first 24 hours of treatment. The treatment itself will usually take 15 minutes or less, so you can feel free to schedule your beauty boost on a lunch break or at any time throughout your day.

Consistent Results
The injections are not deep and very fine needles are used- similar to an insulin needle. Therefore, most people describe the sensation as a pinprick and some injection sites don’t produce any pain at all. Dr. Kolenda will provide topical numbing ointment if required. It takes roughly three hours for the medication to bind to specific muscle receptors and patients begin to see a weakening of muscle movement in approximately 3-4 days.
Full effects can be appreciated by one-week post-treatment, and we’ll check in with you to ensure you don’t have any concerns or questions. We’ll recommend that patients schedule regular maintenance treatment before the product wears off, an average of 4 months apart. That ensures consistent results and won’t allow the muscles to regain considerable strength between treatments.
You’ll be able to return to your day without any downtime after your procedure. In most cases, no lasting marks or bruises are present; however, everybody has a different proclivity for bruising, so there is a slight chance you’ll develop a small bruise which can be covered with makeup. Ways to avoid this include staying away from any known blood thinning medications as approved by your doctor and avoiding herbal supplements in the weeks before treatment as well. Certain formulations with Omegas, Vit E, Ginseng, Ginko Biloba and others may lead to unnecessary bruising.

Post-procedure care instructions are easy
BOTOX® Cosmetic can shrink the masseter muscles used for chewing at the sides of the jaw as these become overdeveloped and quite strong in some people. Excessive sweating syndromes like axillary hyperhidrosis- underarm sweating- and other areas are also effectively treated this way.
While there is no high-maintenance aftercare required, you’ll be advised not to go to the gym, workout or sweat in the first 12 hours post-procedure, and not to press directly on the treatment zone.
Achieving the desired effect with Botox
Everyone’s facial muscles are somewhat particular to them, and their metabolism of the medication will be too. For this reason, it is difficult to promise or predict precisely how much product will be required to achieve the desired effect or how often treatment should be done. For some, a 50-70% softening of the muscle will be the maximum they can see. Some clients will be treated more often than others.
What areas of your face can benefit from treatment?
The effects of injectable neuromodulators work beautifully in harmony with dermal fillers, and your surgeon may suggest a combination of volume restoration and smoothing to create a “liquid facelift” effect.
In recent years, this incredibly versatile product has been approved for numerous off-label uses and has been a reliable treatment option in conventional medicine for many years. Everything from headaches to full body muscle contractions have benefited from neuromodulator treatments. In the cosmetic field, Health Canada approves BOTOX® to treat the glabellar, “number 11” lines between brows, the crow’s feet lines at the outer edges of the eyes and the horizontal forehead expression lines.
Off-label applications are common and include the angularis oris- depressor muscles at the corner of the mouth which pull downward, the orbicularis oris which encircles the lips and leads to “smoker’s lines,” muscles under the nose and even on the neck.

What are the risk factors for treatment with BOTOX® in Toronto?
All procedures, whether surgical or more minimally invasive, do carry some degree of risk. We mitigate these with extremely strict safety protocols, and only offer this treatment in the hands of a Royal College certified surgeon. A delicate technique and avoidance of blood thinners reduce the most common side effect which is bruising. Another possible rare issue is the dispersal or shifting of product out of the intended treatment area. When this happens over the eyebrow, for instance, a temporarily droopy eye may result.
To avoid spreading product into adjacent muscles, patients are advised against touching or pressing on the area for a short time post-procedure, and meticulous precision injection techniques are used. Your surgeon will review the other rare health concerns and possible complications so that you are well-informed and comfortable before proceeding.
