Surgery Recovery: What To Expect After Your Blepharoplasty

LEARN MORE ABOUT BLEPHAROPLASTY PROCEDURES

Undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure on the eyelids is referred to as blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery. The procedure itself and the recovery are relatively straightforward with minimal scarring and high patient satisfaction rates. However, like all cosmetic surgeries, planning and research go a long way to prepare you for optimal outcomes.

Here, we’ll help you to understand what’s involved in the process and healing after you choose to refresh the appearance of your eyes.

In The Days Following Blepharoplasty

If you’ve had a general anaesthetic, you may feel groggy or nauseous for a day or two. Local anaesthetic and IV sedation offer a quicker return to normal, but you’ll still need to have a friend or family member on hand to pick you up after your procedure. You can expect your eyes to be blurry and watery as the post-procedure swelling develops.

The delicate eye skin is prone to fluid retention so even though the surgery is not described as overly painful, the frustration of facial puffiness should be expected for 7-14 days. You’ll be advised to relax your eyes when at home, so listening to music or audiobooks can be a good way to pass the time. Your facial plastic surgeon will instruct you about applying topical medication to incisions and cold compresses if necessary.

Your surgeon will send you home with medication and advise you to keep your head somewhat elevated. This helps to reduce not only swelling but associated discomfort too.

If you wear contacts or makeup, you’ll need to refrain from doing so for a short period.

We all know that one of the most captivating and expressive facial areas can be a person’s eyes. Find out more about how blepharoplasty can help you.

After One Week

You’ll still need to avoid certain activities such as bending over or heavy lifting to help reduce discomfort and swelling. You’ll note that the inflammation begins to go down after seven days, but you’ll have to rest your eyes regularly for another week.

10-14 Days

By 1-2 Months Post-Procedure

The eyelid skin should be smooth and inflammation-free. Your vision and eye-watering will be back to normal in most cases. You’ll have ongoing follow up appointments with your surgeon to make sure everything is on track. By this point in the recovery, there are usually no more restrictions related to sports, working out at the gym, or wearing makeup.

The long-term benefits of eyelid surgery can be dramatic. Many patients find that their apparent age is significantly reduced, and they appear confident, vibrant and happier after their eyelid surgery. The recovery requires some time away from work, but the results are very long-lasting and allow you to age more gracefully than you may have without help.
