Everything You Need to Know About a Neck Lift in Toronto After Weight Loss

LEARN MORE ABOUT NECK LIFT PROCEDURES

Many people think wrinkling due to age is the only reason to undergo a neck lift in Toronto. Another common reason for men and women of all ages to seek surgical neck tightening, or, lower rhytidectomy, is weight loss.

Toronto neck lift after weight loss

Once you’ve done the hard work of shedding your excess weight, the stretched skin left behind may or may not retract on its own. A few factors, including age and skin quality, affect the laxity and sagging people experience after. When 6 months or more have passed, and the neck skin still appears loose, patients may seek facial plastic surgery to help get back a firmer jawline and neck.

Sagging skin all over the body is common after a significant loss of weight. Unlike skin on the thighs, belly or arms, it’s not easy to hide the excess on a neck. A common side effect of both weight gain and loss is that the definition of a person’s jawline and neck can disappear. Many people feel self-conscious about this loss of delineation and wear scarves or high-collared tops in an attempt to hide it.

People often feel self-conscious about the vertical bands that form under chins and hanging skin referred to as “turkey neck.” It may be especially discouraging if you take great care of your skin, yet your neck appears older than your face. Each person’s skin changes uniquely as they age. For some, skin integrity, firmness and elasticity will break down faster in some areas and lead to unwanted signs of aging. learn more

What does neck lift surgery do?

During a Toronto neck lift, small incisions are made just under the chin, and sometimes near the ears. The muscle bands will be tightened, and excess fat can be directly excised or liposuctioned. If there is loose skin to tighten, it will be pulled taut toward the ears and secured while extra skin is trimmed away. The scars should be well-hidden in most cases and will heal to be faint and thin if well cared for.

Recovering from a neck lift

Most patients heal within 1-2 weeks. The incisions will be small. You can expect mild to moderate swelling for 3-5 days then improvement over the following weeks. You’ll wear a compression bandage for one week as well which helps conform your neck and chin to its new contour, and reduce swelling faster.

Most regular activities, including sports and working out, will be permitted again 3 weeks after surgery. For those who have strict fitness routines they don’t want to miss, taking a few weeks off can be challenging. However, it’s an important post-op instruction to ensure you don’t prolong swelling or cause bleeding. Likewise, don’t bend over or lift anything heavy until your surgeon clears you to. You’ll need to sleep with the head of your bed slightly elevated for a couple weeks to see that swelling resolve faster as well.
